VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – A Virginia Beach neighborhood is currently facing an unusual and distressing situation. Residents of Holland Pines have been reporting a persistent foul odor, described as sulfury and similar to rotten eggs, lingering in the air for several days.
Local resident Yuna Jung mentions noticing the smell while heading to the bus stop and during softball practice, stating it’s been like this for “the past threeish days.” Another resident, Selena Gillion, agrees, describing the odor as “really bad.”
The City of Virginia Beach has taken note of these complaints and is actively investigating the source of the smell. Public Utilities and Public Works departments have conducted tests on nearby ponds and waterways but have yet to identify any traces of sanitary sewage, which could have been a potential cause.
In a recent statement, the city suggested that natural causes, possibly exacerbated by the current dry weather conditions, might be contributing to the odor’s intensity and persistence. Despite this lingering smell, children in the neighborhood continue to play outside, showing the community’s resilience in the face of this ongoing issue.
Virginia Beach is also collaborating with the Hampton Roads Sanitation District and the local office of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to further investigate and address the odor.
As the investigation continues, the residents of Holland Pines hope for a quick resolution to this malodorous mystery, which has brought an unexpected disruption to their daily lives.
