Breaking Alert: Central Virginia Grapples with Devastating Wildfires

News Update: Wildfires in Central Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The Virginia Department of Forestry (DOF) has been actively responding to several wildfires across central and southwest Virginia. Since October 15, marking the start of Virginia’s fall fire season, there have been 113 wildfires that burned over 12,000 acres. The DOF’s efforts have successfully protected 203 homes and 267 structures.

Notable fires include:

  • Afton Mountain Fire, Nelson County: This fire, caused by a vehicle fire near mile marker 100 off Interstate 64, covers approximately 10 acres.
  • Quaker Run Fire, Madison County: Now 90% contained with voluntary evacuation orders lifted.
  • Matts Creek Fire, Bedford County: Located in the James River Face Wilderness, this fire has consumed about 2,800 acres and is being managed by various agencies including the U.S. Forest Service and Virginia DOF.

Fire bans are in effect for Madison County and Shenandoah National Park, and the Rapidan Tract of the Rapidan Wildlife Management Area is temporarily closed. Other significant fires in the region include the fully contained Tuggles Gap fire in Patrick County and a new fire in Hoover Camp, Buchanan County, currently at 700 acres with 50% containment.
